Conference Overview
The Government of India (GoI) has embarked upon an ambitious
initiative to provide a Unique Identification to
every resident of India and has constituted the
Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) for
this purpose. The UIDAI has been created as an
attached office under the Planning Commission. Its
role is to develop and implement the necessary
institutional, technical and legal infrastructure to
issue unique identity numbers to Indian residents.
The Unique Identity Project seeks to assign a Unique
Identity (UID) number to each resident of the
country that is nationally portable and remains a
permanent identifier right from birth to death. The
Aadhaar initiative is mega project with stakeholders
from the Central, State, and Local Governments, as
well as public and private sector agencies across
the country. As UID-linked infrastructure expands
over the next five years, there is a possible
opportunity of USD 20 billion with the ability to
create 350,000 new jobs. From the sixth year, the
opportunity could be USD 8-10 billion annually.
It is in this context of huge market opportunities
thrown open by UID, the Conference is planned at ISB
Hyderabad through The Identity Initiative (IDI) in
collaboration with Wadhwani Centre of
Entrepreneurship Development (WCED). The aim of the
conference would be two-fold:
- To bring out insights on UID through panel
discussions between UID team, academicians and
the corporate world.
- To showcase new ideas on the transformative
power of UID.
