August 1, 2010: Accelerating the Deployment of Solar Energy in India


The Energy, Manufacturing and Operations club at the Indian School of Business, Hyderabad, hosted a panel discussion on “Accelerating the Deployment of Solar Energy in India” on August 1 2010.  
 
The event was an interactive session between the industry and the students. The event featured a variety of speakers from this highly dynamic industry. The six panellists in the discussion were Sanjoy Sanyal - Country Director for New Ventures India,  Sheetal Reddy from Green Stratos Energy Consulting,  Colonel Vijay Bhaskar, CEO Coromandel Energy and Rukmini Matoory– Head of  Solar Projects  at Coramandel Energy, Adithya Nallanchakravarthula - Research & Development Lighting at Intelizon,  Mahua Acharya -Chief Strategy Officer at Emergent Ventures and Kartik Srivatsa – Investment advisor at SONG Investment Advisors.
 
Sanjoy Sanyal, was the moderator of the two hour session fielding questions from the audience and posing some to the panel. Colonel Bhaskar from Coromandel kicked off the session with the prospects for Solar Thermal Power in India, highlighting the fact that India’s geographic location and intensity of sunlight could make it a potential power house in the Solar Thermal space in the future.  Sheetal Reddy, an alumnus and Director of Green Stratos, spoke on the guidelines for solar rooftop, grid and off-grid solutions. She ran through the objectives and impact of the Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission objectives and also showed the audience a financial model for a solar off-grid rooftop solution.  
 
Adithya from Intelizon took the audience through the growth story in the energy efficient LED space followed by Mahua Acharya of Emergent Ventures who critically analyzed the JNNSM and the resulting challenges faced by  upcoming solar companies to scale up. Finally Kartik from Song Advisors gave the audience an exciting outlook to the industry from a venture capitalist point of view. He felt the energy efficiency space had a strong value proposition, with the sector being capital efficient, scalable,  growing fast and the ability for a venture capitalist to exit quickly.
 
The GM Club along with the EMO Club held a talk by Sun Edison on July 29, with the CEO of SunEdison—Pashupathy Gopalan joining the discussion on solar energy. The team from SunEdison including alumnus Vignesh Nandakumar highlighted the immense prospects in the solar photovoltaic industry. Mr Mahua Acharya, Chief strategy Officer of Emergent Ventures also gave a talk on solar and other green energy solutions provided by Emergent Ventures. She also described in detail the financial viability of such projects.
