Anand Nandkumar is an assistant professor in the strategy area at the Indian School of Business. His research interests include Entrepreneurship and Industry evolution, Innovation, Patents and Economics of Technological change, Markets for Technology, Competition in ICT Industry and Economics of Information Security. He recently won the prestigious ‘2009 William W Cooper Doctoral Dissertation Award’ from Carnegie Mellon University (CMU). His dissertation, “Securing their future? The role of markets for technology, organization capabilities and opportunity costs on business model and performance in the information security market,” explores how the existence of markets for technology influences competition and business models of startups. It also explains how opportunity costs of entrepreneurship influences entrepreneurial outcomes.

At the ISB, Professor Nandkumar teaches “Strategic Challenges for Innovation-based Startups”, a course that provides prospective entrepreneurs with information and tools for managing strategic challenges that are unique to early stage high tech. startups. In addition, he also co-teaches “Strategic Innovation Management” which provides potential R&D managers with insights into dealing with managerial issues related to the management of innovation.

Professor Nandkumar graduated with PhD and MPhil in Public Policy and Management from Carnegie Mellon University (CMU), apart from also having a masters in Information Systems Management from the same university. He also has a chartered accounting degree. His professional experience include stints with Morgan Stanley Dean Witter in New York City and with a Silicon Valley technology startup as a product manager. Currently, he also serves as a strategy advisor for a couple of early stage technology startups.
