Joseph  Gyourko

Joseph  GyourkoJoseph Gyourko is the Martin Bucksbaum Professor of Real Estate, Finance and Business and Public Policy, The Wharton School. He is also the Chairperson of Real Estate Department and also the Director of the Samuel Zell and Robert Lurie Real Estate Centre.

Gyourko's research area lies in the field of Real estate finance, urban and real estate economics and housing markets. He is currently associated with projects like housing market fundamentals, land use regulations and housing affordability, and commercial real estate cycles. His recent consultations deals in private equity investing in real estate, real estate securities and valuation issues and housing market analysis.

Gyourko has many representative publications to his credit. The latest being “Urban Decline and Durable Housing” that appeared in the Journal of Political Economy,” Why is Manhattan So Expensive? Regulation and the Rise in House Prices.” in the Journal of Law and Economics and "The Structure of Local Public Finance and the Quality of Life" that appeared in the Journal of Political Economy. Gyourko hails from a rich teaching background and has held many important positions. He was made the Acting Chair at the Real Estate Department; the Research Director, the Wharton Real Estate Centre. He was also the Visiting Scholar to the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia.

Gyourko has served on the Editorial Boards of the Journal of Urban Economics; the Real Estate Finance and Economics, Journal of Regional Science. On the professional front, Gyourko was the Trustee to the Urban Land Institute, Trustee to the EII Realty Securities, Inc. He was also a part of the Executive Committee of the Philadelphia District Council of the Urban Land Institute, and a Trustee to Max and Marian Farash Foundation. Gyourko is a PhD holder from the University of Chicago, 198 and completed his A B from Duke University.
