Leaders Speak
During the ISB Leadership Summit 2008, leaders of tomorrow at the ISB shared what they perceived leadership as. Some quotes from the Class of 2009
“‘Don't ask yourself what the world needs; ask yourself what makes you come alive. And then go and do that. Because what the world needs are people who have come alive.’ - Harold Whitman. This quote captures what I feel is the essence of leadership. For me a leader is driven by passion, by belief in a vision or a goal that in turn affects everything s/he takes up. One can’t separate this attitude from the individual, and it is that awe-inspiring dedication that makes you want to join them in their journey. In essence, leadership is simple. We complicate it with too many theories and ideas. It need not involve grand gestures or big rallies. It is about taking a stand about something you believe in, and then having the personal courage to follow that up, even when it gets very hard to do so” - Niharika Pande
“Leadership is all about managing change and uncertainty. As the world heads into the uncertain times, I guess that ability to deal with ambiguity and the vision of identifying opportunities even in distress will distinguish the successful from the ordinary. At ISB we strive to be one of them for the world of tomorrow.” - Debottam Dutta
“I believe the future belongs to those who prepare for it. India is well on course to becoming a global leader because it perceives the current economic scenario as an opportunity, not as a threat.”- Gautam Chopra
“Simply put leadership for is the process of creating a highly motivated team out of a disparate group of individuals. A good leader, not only ensure that his team has the drive to climb the big ladder, but he also ensure that the ladder leans against the right wall. Leadership is all about drive, hope, empathy, empowering. The best of leaders takes genuine joy in the successes of those under them.” - Nimesh Harshad Mehta
Where have the leaders gone? If the world finds itself in the state that it is today, it is because there are no leaders worth even a mention. In these turbulent times- the one quality of a manager that is going to put to the sternest test -is that of Leadership. The ILS is but a small effort to amalgamate management and leadership We live in unfortunate times when it is the anti-hero like Osama Bin Laden who can inspire people to die for him while search as we may we can only ask “Where have the leaders gone.” - Rohit Kapoor
“A leader is one who can inspire people to make castles in air and then help them build foundations for their castles. The ILS provides us the opportunity to be inspired by these leaders and help us connect with the entrepreneur hiding inside us.” - Nalin Kant Srivastava
“Leadership is about creating shared vision of success and realising it collectively.” - Rashmi Ramachandra.
“Great leaders are not born. They acquire the skills of leadership as they go through life. But, for us, the students at the ISB, participating in ILS, gave us the opportunity to learn from the masters of the trade. It helped us find out what our leadership quotient is, and how to hone our leadership potential for life.” – Kaavya Kasturirangan
