You have worked with the Indian Navy as a Principal Medical Officer; tell us something about your experiences. In my tenure as a Principal Medical Officer, in the Indian Navy, I was directly responsible for the health and well being of all naval personnel stationed in West Bengal. I had the opportunity to conduct many medical camps and disaster relief operations in Orissa and West Bengal. The Naval training in Disaster Management equipped me to apply my skills to any situation or environment.
I also independently conceived and successfully conducted a candle light Vigil and many workshops in Kolkata for AIDS awareness. Working under the tutelage of Naval Leaders, I have imbibed in me the ethos of integrity, resolve, determination and leading by example. The white uniform also gave me several opportunities to interact with leaders like the Chief of Naval Staff of foreign Navies, Governors of West Bengal and Sikkim, Defence minister and foreign diplomats.
What were your primary reasons for opting for the Indian School of Business from other B-Schools in the country or abroad? I chose to pursue my management studies from ISB because the school goes beyond providing just education. The experienced peer group from different domains and cultures also encourages learning beyond the confines of classroom and curriculum. The school has become a global brand, with the FT rank 15 for management programmes across the world. The faculty at ISB is one of the worlds finest and includes Professors from partner schools like Wharton, Kellog and LBS.
Also the world is looking at India as an emerging giant. ISB is an excellent institution to understand the emerging markets and their interaction with the global economy .The school is also an exciting hub of research in international managerial and business sciences.
What are some of the opportunities here that you are looking forward to? As a doctor, I realised that the concept of ‘Health for all” can be achieved only by effective management of man and material resources in the domain. ISB will equip me with tools to understand the industry in a more structured format and my interaction with future global leaders will give me a unique perspective in their area of expertise.
I specially enjoy and look forward to the inspiring speaker sessions by global achievers which give me a chance to understand “success” first hand.
What do you think about the infrastructure and the facilities provided at the ISB? The infrastructure and the facilities at ISB are exemplary. The residential accommodation is well furnished, the class rooms are state of the art and the campus is very self sufficient. The school has its own wellness centre, a 24 hrs coffee shop, cafeterias, a bank and a post office. The Recreation Centre is a great place to unwind with its squash courts, swimming pool and other sports.
The aesthetic architecture and the serene surroundings are appreciated by all who visit the campus. It is also not unusual to find peacocks in the well manicured lawns.
Describe your peer group in brief. The student community at ISB is an exceptional blend of achievers and leaders from different professions and cultures. The diverse student body encourages us to think beyond the obvious and believes in learning from our peers by discussion and logic. The institute takes special care in forming study groups and sections to complement different talent and skill sets of its members. This assortment of unusual views gives me a refreshingly new perspective to view things differently.
Every student at ISB brings something unique to the institution’s ‘think tank’. An atmosphere like this cultivates tolerance, respect and understanding of varied opinions. The only common thread which binds each student is commitment to ‘excellence’.
If you were to recommend the ISB to a prospective applicant what would you say? Any prospective applicant to ISB must realise that the one year programme will broaden their horizons. The school is for budding leaders and gives them an excellent platform for interaction with leaders from other domain and expertise. You will learn both competition and collaboration under the aegis of the school. All the best!
