Empowering Indian Women Work force: Lessons from Banking industry

In mid-1980s, Industrial Credit and Investment Corporation of India (ICICI), initiating a culture providing opportunities on the basis of merit and performance, rewrote the rules of structure in corporate India. In 2000, against a mere 4 percent representation in senior positions in Fortune 500 companies, the women managers of ICICI occupied about 40 per cent of the corner offices in senior positions.

What created an environment of equal employment opportunities?

The white paper on the mentioned topic may look at analysing the present state of Indian working women. What changes have been taking place in the corporate world? What has been the effect of the government policies and reforms undertaken on the corporate to focus on equality at work place? What are the lessons that we can learn from examples of growing women at board level in banking domain where banks like ICICI have been active in reviving its equal employee workforce and survive the test of times? Can the strategies arrived at from these insights be applied to the other corporate? How feasible are these recommendations? What is the role of women in the bigger picture of India’s long-term growth story? Are we ready for hundreds of ICICI women stories? Is it time for 50% on board members to be women?
