Women in Business Club hosts inaugural speaker session 2011-2012

The Women in Business Club (WIB) at the Indian School of Business (ISB) hosted two inspirational speakers at its inaugural event recently.

The first speaker was Savita Mahajan, who is currently serving as the Deputy Dean and CEO of ISB’s Mohali campus. She shared her experiences – a corporate strategy leadership role at Karvy Consultants where her mandate was to grow the organisation systematically, her consulting engagement with the Tibetan Government and the more recent responsibilities leading the ISB Mohali campus.

Mahajan opined that women need to let go of the desire to prove their excellence in everything they undertake to themselves and others, and instead accept trade-offs while trying to balance multiple responsibilities. She also encouraged the young audience not to refrain from negotiating well at work – either for responsibilities or remuneration. She felt that women are better served if they are upfront and proactive in signaling their interest to take up responsibilities rather than waiting for opportunities to be given to them.

The next speaker was Jayanti Rajagopalan, Founder of Detours, a company offering personalised and customised theme tours of Hyderabad for individuals and small groups. Prior to this, she had played sales and marketing roles in Titan for over ten years before taking up programme management responsibilities at the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation.

A natural story-teller, Rajagopalan regaled the audience with her experiences at Titan and her travels all over India. She recounted her experience in Nepal that inspired her to start Detours. She feels that women, in general, put in a lot of emotional effort into their job, and the benefits of this are often underestimated. Drawing from her experience, she advised the students not to let criticism shatter their confidence, and to recognise and deal with internal, self-imposed pressure before dealing with external pressures. Her most important advice to women who want to start their own ventures is to not ideate endlessly or make excuses, but to actually execute their ideas.

An interactive question-and-answer session followed, where both speakers gave students further insights into their personal and professional lives, and the challenges they face. For members of WIB, it was an inspiring session.
