Dear Friends,
These are make or break times for Learning and Development in
organisations. Learning takes
an upturn during the downturn, and in this issue of CEE
Emerge, Stephen Newman, Programme Director, Executive
Development at Ericsson, and Nick Van Dam, Global Director for
Learning at Deloitte, in different sections, underscore the need
for L&D. While Nick emphasises on the role of technology,
Stephen talks about the ‘mindset’ of learning.
Our Alumni Chapter Meets continue to focus on speaker series
which deals with relevant issues and solutions. This time at
Bangalore, our alumni deliberated on various marketing
innovations during the financial crisis. At the Hyderabad meet,
alumni gathered in large numbers to take ahead in a structured
manner, the vision of the CEE Alumni Association.
We also plan to extend our online connectivity through the Alum
Portal which will shortly be launched.
Do send us your suggestions and thoughts.
Thanking you,
Best Wishes
Deepak Chandra
Associate Dean, CEE

Taking Forward the ISB
Experience
Bangalore Alumni
Meet – Focus on Marketing Innovations in Downturn
The Bangalore Alumni Chapter came together on 10th
April. The highlight of the meet was a discussion on
marketing innovations during turbulent times. The
speaker for the event was Arun Pereira, Visiting
Associate Professor of Marketing at the Indian School of
Business and Saint Louis University. Professor Pereira
spoke at length about the different models of
innovations which are being undertaken by organisations
world over. The Alumni shared their experiences about
the various difficulties they faced and how innovation
at their firm level helped them tide over the situation.
Interesting examples on particular cases brought in rich
industry perspective, and a lot of great ideas came in
from unrelated industry participants. Professor Pereira,
after giving update on how marketing innovations were
dealt with world over, moderated an interesting
discussion on the scope of marketing innovations in the
Indian context within the B2B and B2C contexts.
Hyderabad Alumni Meet – A Premier Platform where
Leaders Met
At the Hyderabad Chapter meet, held on 25th April, a
large congregation of alums met to network and take an
overview of their Chapter. The Hyderabad Alumni has 250
members and covers a broad spectrum of people, including
large corporate, women entrepreneurs, SME’s,
academicians etc.
The Chief Guest for the occasion was US Consul General,
Cornelis M Keur. He was welcomed by Deepak Chandra, CEE officials, Pradeep
Dhobale, President of the Hyderabad Chapter and Dr A
Goutam, Secretary of the Hyderabad Chapter.
The Consul General in his address, spoke about
India’s diversity, and how India’s scientific and
engineering talents and entrepreneurial skills, have
driven the world economy in the last 30 years.
Dhobale mentioned that
the Chapter was “a learning platform to take ahead the
ISB experience in a structured manner”. Among some of
the future activities panned were coaching of SMEs and
entrepreneurs, conducting learning and networking
events, and also building climate change awareness.
This was followed by Professor Arun Pereira’s
presentation on marketing innovations during the times
of downturn.
CEE Alumni Portal - Online Environment to Harness the
Power of Alumni Network
The CEE Alumni Portal, as a concept, was discussed at
the time of the launch of the executive education alumni
initiative. It was felt that to keep up the continuity
amongst the alumni offline events at the Chapter level,
there was a need for an online connectivity. The Portal
aims to be a powerful tool in the hands of alumni to
renew connections and establish new relationships. The
portal will have the following features:
-
A
discussion forum based on functional specialisation
- An
opportunity to ask an expert about an issue which they
are grappling with
- An
opportunity to connect back with your course mate online
- An
opportunity to access knowledge resources provided by
our Learning Resources Centre
- Accessing job announcements by Alumni through the portal
The work on the portal is on and the alumni would be able to access the portal in June 09, when it will go live.
Postscripts by CEE Alumni
Alumni Ashok Malhotra, Managing Director, Mettler-Toledo India Private Limited, a unit of Mettler-Toledo
International Inc. attended a CEE Management Development
programme in strategic marketing in the year 2004. He
later revisited the ISB as a visiting practicing manager
to share his learning. After the CEE experience, Malhotra
evolved a long-term strategic marketing plan for Mettler-Toledo India which helped him understand
various sales scenarios. By the time the economic down
turn raised its head, Malhotra and his team was ready
with a plan to boost sales. In an article, which was
recently published in a business paper Mint, he recounts
how the executive education programme at the ISB had a
direct impact on his dealing with marketing strategies
and human recourse issues like attrition. Malhotra is
also the President of CEE Alumni Association, Mumbai
Chapter.
