CEE Emerge

Knowledge Core | Learning Curve | ISB in Media
Dear Friends,

First, I wish you all a prosperous and peaceful 2009.

This issue brings to you the telecom story from one of the poorest states of India - Bihar. Rajnish Kaul, a CEE Alumnus, talks to Professor Jamie Anderson about the challenges of bringing mobile telephony to India’s low income rural consumers.

We have included an interesting talk by Economist Ajit Ranade, about the “mother of all crises” – the financial downturn. Ranade throws different light on how financial crisis relates to the real economy of a country.

The various Alumni forums, during the past months, ensured a process of continuous knowledge sharing and networking. Eminent thought leaders shared their understandings about the present turbulent times. The aim was to come together as a family, take ahead the learning, and finally contribute to the improvement of society.

We welcome your thoughts and ideas on how we can improvise and escalate the activities of the CEE Alumni Chapters. To ensure more participation, from this issue of CEE Emerge, each article has a feedback facility, and your response is welcome.

Looking forward to a year where we continue to strengthen network and share knowledge and best practices.

Best Wishes
Deepak Chandra
Associate Dean, CEE

Knowledge Sharing during Alum Group Events

The month of December saw CEE Alumni groups getting together in different Indian cities, facilitating business networking, activating leadership, building close connections, and entering into deep discussions over relevant themes of leadership and strategy in turbulent times. During each meet at Delhi, Hyderabad and Mumbai, one could see the CEE Alum network at play, as the forums were filled with enormous amount of energy, and turned out to be a space of collective knowledge.

At the Delhi Chapter meet, which was hosted at PhD Chamber of Commerce, the alumni was addressed by Professor Prasad Kaipa, Executive Director, Centre for Leadership, Innovation and Change (CLIC) at the ISB. He spoke on ‘Transformational Leadership in the Times of Turbulence’. He shared with the alumni present about how one should rediscover oneself in these turbulent times in order to provide more focused leadership. The discussion dwelt upon the leadership challenges in the present times of crisis, and explored how the leaders should ignite the genius within to lead the organisation in these difficult times. Lot of anecdotal experiences where shared by the participants and the speaker, and thus lot of insights came through for all.

At Hyderabad, more than 40 alumni attended an insightful talk by Professor Charles Dhanraj, from Kelley School of Business, Indiana University. He spoke on a very interesting theme of how should one look at Strategy in the present scenario. He dwelt upon what organisations should do and what they are not doing. Professor Dhanraj’s presentation had lot of emphasis on innovation, and he drew parallels from organisational responses at various economic downturns in history. Quite a few live case studies were also discussed. At the Hyderabad meet was also hosted a talk on environmental friendly growth initiatives.

At the Mumbai Chapter a lot of reconnect livened up the venue at Rodas, Central Avenue, Hiranandani Gardens, Powai. Speaker Arun Pereira, a Visiting Professor at the ISB, and Associate Professor of Marketing at the Cook School of Business, Saint Louis University, delivered a talk on ‘Marketing Innovations in Turbulent Times’. The event is organised by ISB and sponsored by ISB Alumni Sanjay Mehta, CEO, MAIA Intelligence. Mehta also made a presentation to the guests.

The ISB CEE Alum meets truly represented the best breed of executives who resolved to provide a voice for ISB programmes, as well as be a vehicle to facilitate mutual growth and business development among the Alumni.
