Winning Cases Address Unique Challenges of Mid-sized Indian Businesses
Top with more than 70 accepted submissions from top Indian B Schools, the ISB Case Writing Competition, 2010 received an excellent response from Faculty (the case writing fraternity), both in India and abroad.
The top two winners were felicitated at the 22nd AIMS Annual Management Education Convention, held on August 28, 2010, at New Delhi.
The Winning Case ‘Pepsi Basix partnership: Promoting Livelihoods through Contract Farming of Potato in Jharkhand India’, authored by Professors Gita Bajaj and Neelu Bhullar, both from MDI Gurgaon, addresses how the challenges of marginalised communities are different from those of competing partners in the business world, and the need for managers in business organisations to sensitively deal with marginalized communities for sustainable results. The prize money won was Rs 50,000.
The second prize went to the case ‘Dr Amita Joshi at Samuel Drugs Limited’, authored by Professor Anup K Singh and Abhinav Gupta from International Management Institute, New Delhi. The prize money was Rs. 25,000. The case deals with the challenges of communication, co-ordination, and organisational conflict in determining organisational effectiveness. This case also highlights the point that managers needs to tackle both formal and informal aspects of an organization, rational and social sides of organisational life, and changing dynamics of relationships and networks.
The competition was judges by a panel of 10 Faculty's, both from India and abroad. Each case was evaluated by two judges with great precision. Every case received a comprehensive feedback from the judges. The distinguished panel of judges comprised, Paul Beamish, Ariff Kachra, Nicole Haggerty, Rick Robertson and David Sharp, all from Richard Ivey School of Business, Arun Pereira and Rajesh Chakrabarti from ISB, S Neelamegham, NIILM Centre for Management Studies, Upinder Dhar, Director (Vice-Chancellor), J K Lakshmipat University, Jaipur, and Robert G Jelly, Executive Director, CIMA Education.
Other note-worthy cases were about companies like Wipro, Microsoft India, Cargomar Pvt Ltd., ABC Energy Ltd, Maruti Suzuki India Limited, Park Hotel, Domino Pizza India Limited, Bosch India. Some very localised /regional cases caught attention for their interesting managerial conflicts and challenges e.g. - Punascha – a Bengali Magazine Publishing House, Goli Vadaa Pao- an entrepreneurial venture from Mumbai, Biswa – a microfinance project
All the top 10 cases of the competition now have a chance to be mentored and developed by the ISB-Ivey team to facilitate their being published as a ISB- Ivey cobranded case study. Additionally, ISB invites the top 5 principal case authors to attend the next Case Writing Workshop, to be held in November, 2010.
