Open Programmes

The ISB launched its executive programmes in November 2001. More than 150 participants from over 100 corporations in India and abroad attended the first four open-enrolment programmes. The topics covered in the programmes were; Human Resource Strategy in Transforming Organisations, Marketing Strategies in a Competitive Environment, Strategic Leadership and Corporate Renewal, and Strategic Alliances and Acquisitions.

The faculty comprised global gurus including Sumantra Ghoshal and Lynda Gratton from London Business School; Dipak Jain, Ranjay Gulati, and Bala Balachandran from Kellogg; Jagmohan Raju and Harbir Singh from Wharton; and Patrick Dixon, Chairman of Global Change Ltd. Sandeep Sahney, a participant, who is Senior Vice President, Wockhardt Ltd, said, "It is a great opportunity to have a one-on-one, face-to-face interaction with an international faculty that is shaping management thought currently."

The profile of the participants was diverse both in terms of industry and professional background. Senior managers, entrepreneurs and CEOs from large and small private and public sector companies, came together to upgrade the skills they require to meet the challenges of the global marketplace.

The programmes included a combination of conceptual frameworks and practical insights relevant to tackling live business problems. Participants had an opportunity to network with business leaders from India and from other countries. They learnt not only from the faculty, but also from one another. Most participants were able to take away a real-life action plan that they can implement in their organisation. I M Payne, Manager - Human Resources, Tiger Food Brands, who came all the way from South Africa, said, "These executive programmes are an absolute must for all senior leaders in organisations. The knowledge I have gained will definitely help me rethink our business strategy."

The four executive programmes conducted in November and December received excellent ratings from the participants. The curriculum, the faculty, and the facilities were pronounced incomparable. "This is truly a customer delight programme - inspiring, enlightening, great faculty, and great place," said Sunil Calaso, DGM - Marketing, Max Health Care. Steve Correa, Vice President-Human Resources, Hutchison Max Telecom Ltd. summarised the experience by saying, "Top contribution to an organisation must be supplemented by top class education - the ISB supports such delivery excellently. Truly world-class."

Customised Programmes

The ISB conducted its first customised programme from 4th to 9th January 2002 for the top management of Wipro, at Bangalore. The programme, titled "Wipro Strategic Leaders' Programme" was taught by three faculty - Prof. Harbir Singh from Wharton, Prof. John Stopford from London Business School, and Dr. Pramath Sinha, Dean of the ISB. The Programme was designed to give the top management team of Wipro conceptual inputs that would sharpen their understanding of the competitive forces that impact strategy, growth, and profitability within their industry. The programme also explored issues of organisational transformation, and what needs to be done to align internal processes, and people issues with strategy.

The participants developed Strategic Plans for their respective business divisions, which were then presented to the Chairman and CEOs on the last day of the programme. The process of guiding, challenging, and critically examining the assumptions made by the participant groups in setting targets for future growth, and drawing up an action plan for implementation, was facilitated by the faculty, who shared their insights and experiences from having done similar work with other companies across the globe. The participants found the programme "intellectually stimulating" and said that the insights they had gained would definitely have a high impact on the organisation's performance.
