The Torch Bearers and The Young Leaders
Student life at the ISB includes a very hectic, fast paced, and a highly energetic learning environment. A meticulously planned programme schedule leaves one with no time for anything else. However, the students at the ISB do take time to organise events, participate in programmes and even volunteer for occasions.
The ISB Young Leaders Award and the ISB Torchbearers Award are conferred to students, who shine in their leadership attributes, commitment, and energetic participation in student activities. These awards are organised to felicitate students, who consciously contribute to Brand ISB by organising events, programmes, or extra curricular activities. A careful and special selection procedure is followed on the basis of the countless volunteer hours the students put in and helped with various activities such as placements, admissions, clubs, ISB blogs, summits, conferences, events, communications, winning B-school competitions, special initiatives and a host of other activities.
An award function was organised on April 4, 2008 to mark the beginning of the Graduation Day Ceremony, at the ISB, to acknowledge students, who during their one year, made a remarkable impact in enhancing the image of the ISB. Professor N Viswanadham, Executive Director, Centre for Global Logistics and Manufacturing Strategies (GLAMS), also Chair Person of the selection board for these awards, gave away mementos and certificates to the deserving candidates. Addressing the gathering Professor Vishwanadham said, “The ISB’s mission is to groom future leaders. We at the ISB have identified leaders who are smart, wise and have purity of action and mind. ISB is proud of all these leaders.”
This year Manik Gupta was awarded the Rajat Gupta Award for Excellence in Leadership, a special gold medal, for being the ISB All Rounder and Best Achiever. The Young Leaders get medals and a citation, and all the Torch bearers get special certificates. “I am delighted of course! In the campus, I have truly understood the meaning and importance of time-management. Time is the most precious resource at the ISB. At GSB, we worked hard to implement our mandate – promote inclusiveness on campus, enrich the learning experience, and focus on overall career development,” said Manik Gupta, President, Graduate Students Board (GSB).
“This award is an indication that a person’s hard work is not lost in a sea of 400-plus students. To that extent, it confirms that we are on the right track!” remarked Aarti Kothari, another Torchbearer award nominee.
Ratnakar Gore, President, Business Technology Club at the ISB, commented that “One of the key initiatives was the starting of a flagship event for the Business Technology Club. We hosted the flagship event this year during ISIS 2007. The entire Club put in a lot of efforts, and that alone has been recognised by this award.”
“To me, the ISB represents an opportunity to be involved in many different activities at multiple levels. A rigorous process, with an emphasis on quality output to execute these activities, is really what has been most valuable in honing my leadership skills,” remarked Anuj Kacker, President of Marketing Club at the ISB.
Saumyajit Roy, Director, Entrepreneurship Focus Group, at the ISB, helped organise a very innovative, first of its kind, application discovery and business model competition at the ISB. “Over the last nine months casual discussions and wishful thinking were converted to successful reality by the sheer will power, execution abilities and killer instinct shown by various team members who were behind some of the initiatives that I was a part of. I am confident that the coming batch of 2009 will be able to take these initiatives to even higher levels,” added Saumyajit Roy.
Achint Setia, President Theatre Club, “It feels good that my work has been recognised for community service rather than an individualistic achievement. You can’t work just with the aim to get an award. However, if working for your passions can create a positive impact on your community, nothing like it. The Torch Bearer award convinces me that I have helped others along the way, which is a great feeling!”
