We have two themes
for the conference.
The first theme will be "What is different about
business, entrepreneurship and economic growth in China
vs. India."
The second theme will be "Setting up Special Economic
Zones in India."
China and India are not only competitors, they will
be major players and important trading partners in the
World Economic scene in years to come. Each has much
to learn from what has and has not worked in the past.
Both countries have also much to learn about setting
appropriate economic incentives, investing in infrastructure,
role of property rights and legal institutions and indeed
the role of democratic institutions in fostering growth
and welfare.
India currently has 8 functional Special Economic
Zones and approvals have been given for setting up 18
additional Special Economic Zones. A number of facilities
and incentives are offered to units located in these
Zones and they could play a key role in providing a
further impetus to economic growth in India.
