Pedagogy
Online Preparatory Modules
The programme starts with a few online preparatory courses that
form the foundation for future courses. These modules are
sourced from Harvard Business School Publishing. Participants
spend over 100 hours refreshing their knowledge in the areas of
quantitative methods, accounting and finance.
Pre-Course Reading Material Pre-course reading materials,
in the form of text books, cases, articles, etc, will be made
available to all participants in advance. Participants are
expected to spend approximately 8 to10 hours per week studying
the material before coming to class each term. Online
assessments and pre-course projects are also incorporated into
the programme to ensure academic rigour.
Industry Speakers/Visits
Speaker series or visits are organised during the course.
These interactions complement classroom learning and bring in
practical perspectives to management theories. The speakers
discuss topics as diverse as international growth, corporate
diversity corporate ethics and consumer behaviour, among others.
The School also hosts a number of annual conferences and
seminars with distinguished business leaders and entrepreneurs
as guest speakers.Simulations Simulations are
usually software programmes, which mimic real-life business
situations. The participants, working either in teams or
individually, are asked to take decisions under conditions
specified by the simulation software. These simulations help
participants apply theoretical concepts to aid decision making.
The simulations:
- Test leadership, team and people management skills of
the participants. Participants work on the scenarios as a
group and no individual has authority to demand work from
other members. In other words, there is no hierarchy or
figure of authority within the group.
- Allow participants to use the knowledge acquired to
solve business problems pertaining to different industries.
- Help participants identify relevant management concepts
to be used under different circumstances to achieve the
desired result/outcome.
Practicum/Capstone Experience The capstone
experience is an important pedagogical tool that is designed to
give participants a chance to experience cross-functional
integrative decision making. The capstone experience could be in
the form of action learning/practicum or a comprehensive
simulation exercise. The programme office reserves the right to
choose the appropriate tool.
In a capstone simulation exercise, participants face a complex
and rapidly evolving scenario in which, business acumen is
tested and enhanced through modeling, analysis and strategic
planning. This simulation will require the application of
knowledge gained throughout the programme.
In a practicum, a team of participants work on a live business
problem as a team of consultants. The projects are sourced from
an organisation (preferably from amongst the class) and the team
works under guidance of a mentor nominated by the organisation
and the ISB. The end result desired, is a report outlining the
proposed solution to the problem with specific action points
identified to achieve success.
