Student Profiles 2009-10

Events 2010

May 22, 2010: The retail club began its store visit series for the year even before the club was formally formed. A visit was made to the Metro Cash and Carry store. Given that such stores are only accessible to registered buyers the learning’s were entirely different. Insights were gathered on Metro’s marketing, pricing and in-store planning and layout strategies. The students also learned about the various inventory management techniques that were being adopted by Metro to reduce number of inventory days and to increase operational efficiency.

Speaker Sessions 2010

July 7, 2010: Professor Jagmohan Raju interacted with the students to discuss some of his Jagmohan Raju views on the trends in the retail industry.  From his previous work he discussed on, "How coupons can be an interesting tool to generate short term spikes in the business?

  • An interesting concept of “Category Captain“, where the retailer hands over the product placement, pricing, competing brand quantities, inventory management of the whole 'aisle' in every store to a consumer goods manufacturer.

In the context of Indian retail, key topics discussed were:

  • Whether the market is ready for private label and whether the retailers who are joining the private label wagon are ready to do so
  • Challenges that the Indian retail sector will face to increase the penetration of "Organised Retailing" from the current levels of 5-7%. The challenges enumerated were infrastructure, infancy of the supply chain , the sustainability of profits by investing in big stores etc
  • FDI restrictions , Single brand stores, malls development , marketing blind spots for stores etc
