Achal Bakeri
Founder, Chairman and Managing Director, Symphony Limited
 
Achal Bakeri heads Symphony Limited, the largest manufacturer of air-coolers in the world. After earning an MBA in Finance and Real Estate Finance from the University of Southern California, Los Angeles, USA, in 1986, Achal came back to India and joined his family business of Real Estate Development. In 1988 he established Symphony air-cooler manufacturing operations. Today, Symphony is a public-listed company with a market capitalization of over Rs. 8000 crores. It has subsidiaries in USA, Singapore, China and Mexico and sales in over 60 countries.
 
In 1997 Achal was a Chevening Scholar at the London School of Economics for a programme in Leadership & Global Governance. He is a recipient of several awards in entrepreneurship and leadership. He has been associated with various professional bodies and public charitable institutions. He serves as a member of the Board of Management of CEPT University, Governing Council Member at MICA (Mudra Institute of Communications, Ahmedabad) and as a trustee of the Jivraj Mehta Hospital (Bakeri Medical Centre). His interests include collecting contemporary art, fitness, travel and reading.

Adi Godrej

Adi Godrej is Chairman of The Godrej Group.  The Godrej Group is a mainly privately held, over a 100 year-old family conglomerate, with operations in India and several other countries.


Mr. Godrej is Chairman of the Board of the Indian School of Business, and Past President of the Confederation of Indian Industry. He has been a member of the Dean’s Advisory Council of the MIT Sloan School of Management and a member of the Wharton Asian Executive Board.  He is also the Chairman of the Urban Institute of India.  Mr. Godrej is a recipient of several awards and recognitions including the Rajiv Gandhi Award 2002, The American India Foundation (AIF) Leadership in Philanthropy Award, May 2010, The Entrepreneur of the Year for the Asia Pacific Entrepreneurship Awards 2010, AIMA-JRD Tata Corporate Leadership Award 2010, BMA-Management Man of the Year Award 2010-2011,  Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the year 2012, the Padma Bhushan 2012,  The Asian Awards, Entrepreneur of the Year 2013, the All India Management Association-Business Leader of the Year 2015 and  the Clinton Global Citizen Award 2016 for his Leadership in the Private Sector. Ann-Veruschka Jurisch
Managing Director, Ernst Schmidheiny Foundation, Switzerland

Ann-Veruschka is the managing director of the Ernst Schmidheiny Foundation, and she is promoting economic literacy programmes with a focus on Switzerland, but also internationally. In 2006, she joined Spectrum Value Management Ltd., a Swiss-based single family office that manages the industrial and private investments of the Thomas Schmidheiny family and served as Head of Family Philanthropy and Foundations. Earlier positions include the country desk Vietnam and Myanmar at the German ministry development co-operation (BMZ), and legal officer at the Claims Resolution Tribunal for dormant accounts in Zurich. Ann-Veruschka holds a legal doctorate from the University of Konstanz. Her work-base is Rapperswil-Jona, Switzerland; home is Konstanz, Germany. She is a Responsible Leader of the BMW Foundation Herbert Quandt and on the board of the Think Tank Thurgau foundation.
Anil Sainani
Director, S & S Empowering Solutions Private Limited and Chief Advisor, Grant Thornton India LLP

Mr. Anil Sainani is member of a business family, a Family Business Expert and an Executive Coach to family business owners and senior leaders (CEOs & functional Heads). Over the last 12 years he has facilitated over fifty corporate business families (including the Godrej Group, GMR Group, Dalmia Bharat Group etc.) build family alignment and/or develop their Family Constitution. Mr. Sainani has developed a new delivery mechanism whereby the time taken in developing a Family Business Constitution has been reduced from about 2-3 years to 4-6 months.
 
Earlier, Mr. Sainani worked in his own family business for 5 years and then in Government of India as a civil servant for over 13 years. He has been a visiting faculty to ISB Hyderabad, IIM Ahmedabad, IIM Bangalore and IIM Udaipur. He has also conducted workshops case discussions on family businesses for Confederation of Indian Industries, Young Presidents Organization, All India Management Association and Institute of Chartered Accountants of India. He has also authored a book on family business titled, “Triumph of Togetherness.” Mr. Sainani has done his Masters from IIM Bangalore, is a Certified CEO Coach and holds a Diploma in Creative Writing in English and a Masters’ degree in Arts.
Aju Jacob

Aju Jacob is Director at Synthite Industries Ltd., a global leader in spice oleoresins and other plant-derived natural product solutions with a turnover of over USD 225 million. Aju joined his family firm, Synthite as its full time Director in 1987, soon after completeing his Chemical Engineering degree from Bangalore University in 1986.
 
Realizing growth opportunities as the market opened up in the early 90’s, Aju attuned Synthite to market oriented strategies. He was instrumental in improving process efficiencies that led to increased thru-put, higher yields and reduced cycle times. He established six manufacturing units in India. Aju also setup Synthite’s Realty Division which is into construction of villas and apartments in Kochi, Kerala. The company also owns Synthite Taste Park, a private industrial park, at Kochi. Today, Synthite commands over 30 percent share of the global market, contributing to over 50% of exports of spice oleoresins from India. The Company has offices in US, Europe, China and Sri Lanka and is geared up to attain a target of Rs.3000 Crore by 2020.
 
Mr. Aju Jacob is also committed to social causes. Presently he is the Treasurer of Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church Medical Mission Hospital & Medical College at Kolenchery. He also serves as the Joint Secretary for St. Peters Senior Secondary School at Kadayirippyu. He is the founder President of the Brookside Club, Kolenchery and advisor to Muthoot Institute of Management and Studies.
Denise H Kenyon-Rouvinez
Wild Group Professor of Family Business and Director, IMD Global Family Business Center, IMD Business School, Switzerland

Denise is an international speaker, consultant and educator in the field of family business. For nearly 20 years she has worked extensively with very large family businesses in Asia, the Middle East, Europe, North and South America and has dealt with complex governance and wealth situations. Denise has authored several books on Family Business (on various topics that include: governance, succession, successor development, next generation, family business challenges and women's role in family business). She has also published articles on succession, competence, growth, IPOs, governance issues and on serial business families. Denise is the founder and former president of the Family Business Network (FBN) chapter in French speaking Switzerland. She has received several international awards for her research work. Denise is a certified coach working with the Solution Focused Coaching approach.
 
Denise is also the founder, CEO and Chairman of Gen10 SA, an independent company providing high quality VIP Boutique services to HNW & UHNW entrepreneurial families and families of wealth around the globe in mediation, coaching and education programs around succession, governance, business, ownership, wealth, family office and family philanthropy. Dieter Spaelti
Managing Partner and CEO, Spectrum Value Management Limited, Switzerland     

He studied law at the University of Zurich, obtaining a doctorate in 1989. He began his professional career as a credit officer with Bank of New York in New York, before taking up an appointment as CFO of Tyrolit (Swarovski group), based in Innsbruck and Zurich, in 1991. From 1993 until 2001, he was with McKinsey & Company, ultimately as a partner, and was involved in numerous projects with industrial, financial and technology firms in Europe, the US and Southeast Asia. In October 2002, he co-founded Swiss-based Spectrum Value Management Ltd, which administers the industrial and private investments of the family Thomas Schmidheiny. He joined Spectrum Value Management Ltd. as Managing Partner and at the beginning of 2006 he became CEO. In addition he serves as member of the Board of LafargeHolcim, IHAG Holding and Grand Resort Bad Ragaz. He was a former Board member of Rieter, the world's leading supplier of spinning machines. In India he was a Board member of the Mumbai-based Edelweiss  Financial Services.

Farhad has been at Forbes Marshall since 1982. It is one of India’s leading companies in the fields of steam engineering, energy conservation, utilities management, and industrial process automation and control. The company has joint ventures and alliances with several globally acclaimed multinational corporations. The company caters to business customers from several industries across markets in India, Southeast Asia, the Middle East, Africa, Europe and North and South America.
 
Mr. Forbes is Chairman of the Confederation of Indian Industry’s (CII) National Task Force on Affirmative Action and chairs the Working Group on Integrity and Transparency in the Healthcare sector. He is the Vice-Chairman of the Board of Family Business Network International. He is past chairman of CII Family Business Network India and CII Western Region. He was conferred the CII President’s Award for outstanding leadership to CII’s Western Region and for furthering the overall CII agenda.
 
He is a member of the Advisory Council, Graduate School of Business at Stanford University, and a member of the Advisory Board of the MSx Program (formerly the Sloan Master’s Program) at Stanford Graduate School of Business. He is a recipient of the Sloan Distinguished Alumni Service Award. Mr. Forbes holds MS in electrical engineering from Stanford University and an MS in Management from the Stanford Graduate School of Business.

Gopal Srinivasan is a third generation family member of the TVS Group, which is a $4 Billion (revenue) family owned automotive businesses, now in its 100th year of service to its customers, societal stakeholders and shareholders.


Gopal is the Founder Chairman & MD of TVS Capital Funds Limited, with the vision of supporting and nurturing India’s mid-cap businesses into world-class companies.  It manages assets of over Rs 1,100 Cr, and which makes it amongst the largest domestically raised funds in India. He has been a strong advocate of participation of domestic capital pools in private equity and venture capital funds, and actively supports initiatives for that cause as an Executive Committee member of IVCA (Indian Private Equity & Venture Capital Association). Gopal was also the Chairman of Confederation of Indian Industry’s (CII) National Committee for Private Equity & Venture Capital for the two-year period 2009-2011.


Over an entrepreneurially-oriented career spanning 25 years, Gopal has founded several companies operating in diverse sectors including TVS Capital Funds Limited and TVS Electronics Limited.  He is also the Director in TVS & Sons Ltd, the holding company, and a member of the Board of several Group Companies. Gopal is also actively involved in the promotion of entrepreneurship as an angel investor. He is a founding member of The Chennai Angels, and is closely associated TiE (The Indus Entrepreneurs) where he provides guidance to the budding entrepreneurs on incubating businesses.


Gopal is also very passionate about supporting education.  He is an Advisory Board Member of CKP Center at Loyola Institute of Business Administration (LIBA).  He was also a Board member in Great Lakes Institute of Management and IFMR.  Gopal is an alumni of the Stephen M. Ross, School of Business, University of Michigan and he also serves on the Provost’s Advisory Committee of the University of Michigan. Gopal earned a B.Com from Loyola College, Chennai and an MBA from University of Michigan, USA.

Kamath Ullas L is the Joint Managing Director & CFO of Jyothy Laboratories Ltd (JLL). He is responsible for business development, new projects, sales, financial management. He has over 25 years of experience. Mr. Kamath, has been the part of driving force in transforming the company from a proprietary concern to a multi-brand FMCG corporate with key brands like Ujala, Maxo, Exo, Pril,  Henko, Margo, Mr.White,  Chek, Neem & Maya  Under the leadership, Jyothy Laboratories had a successful IPO offering in the year 2007 and a QIP in 2011. He was also instrumental in the acquisition of Henkel AG's India operations in 2011 and helped elevate Jyothy Laboratories Ltd.  to a successful FMCG company with 10 brands and present market capitalisation of over Rs 6500 crores.
 

Mr. Kamath has participated in the Advanced Management Programme at Wharton Business School (2004) and at Harvard Business School (2008). He also spearheads Jyothy Laboratories’ latest initiative in organised laundry services called Fabric Spa. He won "All India CA Business Achiever Award - SME Category 2008" instituted by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India. Mr. Kamath is a Masters in Science from LSE and also holds qualifications in Commerce, Law and Accountancy. Manisha Singal
Associate Professor of Strategy, Pamplin College of Business, Virginia Tech, USA

Dr. Manisha Singal is an Associate Professor of Strategy in the Department of Hospitality and Tourism in the Pamplin College of Business at Virginia Tech. Her current research interests lie in the areas of business strategy and entrepreneurship in the context of family firms.  Dr. Singal also has a strong interest in understanding the link between corporate social and corporate financial performance.  She often uses the hospitality and tourism industries as a context for her research.  Her research has won several awards, she serves on the editorial boards of several journals and has published over 25 articles that appear in journals including Strategic Entrepreneurship Journal, Family Business Review, Journal of International Management, Journal of International Hospitality Management, and Cornell Hospitality Quarterly.  Dr. Singal received her Ph.D. in Management from Virginia Tech, and has taught classes in strategic management and international business at the undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral levels.

Dainik Bhaskar Group (D B Corp Ltd) started its journey in the year 1958 with its flagship Hindi language Newspaper brand “Daink Bhaskar” foraying in the state of Madhya Pradesh. Today, it is India's largest print media company present in 14 States with 62 editions. It also operates 94.3 MY FM Radio business in 7 states with 20 stations. “DB Digital,” the company's digital business has 13 portals and 2 actively downloaded applications 'Dainik Bhaskar' and 'Divya Bhaskar' mobile app.
 
Pawan heads entire production and information technology department of the Company. Besides, he also heads the Radio & Digital Media Business. He has been awarded by the Prime Minister for the contribution to Indian Language Journalism.
 
An Industrial Engineering graduate from Purdue University (USA), Pawan is credited with conceptualizing and leading the twin-contact-strategy for the launch of the group’s Gujarati newspaper, Divya Bhaskar. This launch strategy received the Marico Foundation's Innovation award for Business Process Innovation. It was also developed into a case study at IIM Ahmadabad. Pawan is an active member of Entrepreneurs Organization (EO) Delhi Chapter and has been a speaker at several industry forums.

For the last 30 years, Mr. Rathi has been working with Sudarshan Chemical Industries Ltd. At present he is the Chairman & Managing Director of the company. Sudarshan is the leading Pigment manufacturer in India. It has manufacturing sites at Roha and Mahad.  The company has its R&D Centre at Sutarwadi, Pune which is accredited by Ministry of Science & Technology, Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, New Delhi. Sudarshan has subsidiaries in Europe, North America and China. It is also planning to open subsidiaries in Central and South America.
 
Mr. Rathi is actively involved with Indian Chemical Manufacturers Association. Prasad has been a member of the Board of Directors at Dr. Reddy's from the year it was founded. The company's revenues have grown from $50 million to $2.5 billion during Prasad's tenure. He has led the global expansion of Dr. Reddy's through both organic and inorganic means.

Prasad Kumar is a member of the GMR Group Holding Board, he is responsible for providing direction to Institution Building, Corporate Governance and Family Governance. He is also the Chairman of the Homeland Security Business of GMR. Prasad Kumar serves as Vice Chairman and Managing Director of the Parampara Family Business Institute (PFBI), a GMR Not-for-profit social initiative. The mission of the Institute is to spread awareness of good family governance in emerging business families.
 
Prasad Kumar brings over 45 years of experience in Corporate Management & Organization Development. He has worked as Head of Human Resources function at Thermax Ltd, Wipro Information Technology Ltd, Computer Maintenance Corporation and Madura Coats Ltd.  Prasad holds key international accreditations and has been ‘executive-in-residence’ at the Kellogg School of Management. Puneet Dalmia

Puneet Dalmia (44) joined Dalmia Cement in 1997 as VP (Sales and Marketing) and quit in 1999 as he was attracted by the dizzying growth and profound impact of the internet. He co-founded JobsAhead.com in 1999. The venture went through the boom-bust cycle of the internet bubble and went on to become a profitable startup with a market share of 55% in the e-recruitment space. In 2004, JobsAhead.com was sold to Monster.com, the global leader in e-recruitment.

Puneet returned to Dalmia Cement in May 2004 as VP (Strategy and Business Development) for the group. He has served as the MD since January 2007. In the last decade the group sales have grown at a CAGR of about 30%. In FY16 the total group revenues was about Rs 8200 Cr (~ $ 1.22 Billion). The market cap as on 12 Sep’16 is ~ $ 2.5 billion. The journey has entailed creation of a more contemporary culture while preserving traditional values. Puneet’s key focus area is to build an organization that will be able to respond with exceptional innovation, speed and flexibility to the growing competitive challenges of the business environment. He believes that for human fulfillment, prosperity and peace should co-exist in all people who work at Dalmia.
 
Currently, Puneet is Chairman of ASSOCHAM’s National Council on Manufacturing.  He has been a member of FICCI’s Executive Committee and Young President’s Organization (YPO) Delhi Chapter. Rajendra Barwale
Managing Director, Maharashtra Hybrid Seeds Company Private Limited
 
After obtaining his graduation, B. Sc. (Hons.) Agriculture from G.B. Pant University of Agriculture and Technology, Pantnagar, in 1976, Rajendra Barwale has been associated with the family business, Maharashtra Hybrid Seeds Co. Pvt. Ltd (MAHYCO) in various capacities. He was appointed as Managing Director of Mahyco in 1989. His main emphasis on Human Resource Development has helped Mahyco to sustain and grow in these changing times. His played crucial role in development of collaborations with Monsanto, obtaining Regulatory approvals for biotech crops and launch of Bollgard cotton and other technology initiatives. He has been actively involved in change management at the company to prepare the same for future. He underwent Agribusiness program at Harvard Business School Executive Education Center, in the year 1993.
 
He served as a member of the Joint Apex Committee of the Indo-Swiss Collaboration on Biotechnology, board director of Protection of Plant Varieties and Farmers’ Right Authority (PPV&FRA), Government of India, and member National Agricultural Innovation Project (NAIP) New Delhi. He has served as the President of Industry Seed Associations, on Board of Biotech Consortium of India Ltd (BCIL), a GOI initiative and served as a member of Oil Seeds & Fiber committee and as a Director on the Board of International Seed Federation (ISF) as India’s representative. He is on the Board of Directors of several Companies and Trusts. He is an active Rotarian and has held many positions in the Rotary organisation.
Ramachandran Kavil
Professor and Executive Director, Thomas Schmidheiny Centre for Family Enterprise, Indian School of Business.

Professor Ram has specialized in family business, entrepreneurship and strategy and has over 34 years of experience as an academic. He obtained a Ph.D. from the Cranfield School of Management, UK in 1986 on a comparative study of the small enterprise policies of Japan, UK and India. He has done research on family business, entrepreneurship and strategy, and has authored/edited six books and published extensively in reputed Indian and overseas journals. His consulting experience includes areas such as family business governance, professionalization, succession planning, strategic planning, and identification of new opportunities for growth, corporate entrepreneurship and turn around strategies in family and non-family environments. He has written several management cases, and has conducted training programmes for family businesses on governance, professionalization, strategic management and entrepreneurship. He has been associated with the FBN International for several years, and has served on various advisory committees of the Government of India, World Bank, Securities and Exchange Board of India.
Ramnarayan S
Clinical Professor, Organisational Behaviour, Indian School of Business

An engineer, MBA, and a Ph.D. in Organizational Behavior from the Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, Ohio, Prof. S. Ramnarayan (Ram) has worked as a manager, a consultant, and a professor at different times in his career. After being a Professor at the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIMA) for 14 years, he is now with the Indian School of Business (ISB) for a decade. He has been a visiting faculty in Organizational Behavior area at the Case Western Reserve University, and a Guest Professor at the University of Bamberg, Germany.
 
He has worked with a large number of organizations in different sectors on a variety of assignments in the areas of learning, change, and leadership. He has carried out assignments funded by different international agencies, such as U.S. Office of Personnel Management, Ford Foundation, World Bank, Commonwealth Secretariat, Department for International Development, Human Capital Leadership Institute and German Science Foundation.
 
Apart from research papers, monographs and case studies, Ram has co-authored books on “Changing Tracks: Reinventing the Spirit of the Indian Railways”, “Change Management: Altering Mindsets in a Global Context” and “Managing Organizational Change”, and co-edited books titled “Strategic Management of Public Enterprises in Developing Countries”, “Managerial Dilemmas: Cases in Organizational Behavior” and “Organization Development: Accelerating Learning and Transformation”.


Ranganathan C K

Mr. CK Ranganathan was born in Cuddalore to parents with primary interest in education. He took up his Bachelors in Chemistry and after a short stint in the family business, he set up “Chik India,” that pioneered marketing of shampoo in sachets. The Company was started with an investment of Rs. 15,000 and was later renamed to CavinKare Pvt. Ltd (CKPL) in 1998. The Company manufactures and markets a portfolio of personal care products under multiple brands both in domestic and international markets. The company also pioneered the concept of 'Family Salons' in India. 
 
CK Ranganathan was the Chairman of Confederation of Indian Industry, Tamil Nadu State Council for the year 2009-10. He was also the past President of Madras Management Association. He is one of the founder-members of the Ability Foundation – an NGO working towards the rehabilitation of the disabled. Ranganathan instituted Cavinkare Ability Awards to celebrate annually the exemplary spirit of individuals who rise above their physical limitations to display that attitude is everything. He also instituted an annual Chinnikrishnan Innovation Awards to encourage small entrepreneurs in memory of his father Shri. R Chinnikrishnan, the man who pioneered the sachet revolution.
 
Mr. Ranganathan was conferred the prestigious “Entrepreneur of the Year award” by the Economic Times in 2004. He was also conferred the award of “CEO with HR Orientation” by the Employer Branding Institute which recognizes Asia’s Best Employer Brands in Singapore.

GM Rao is the Founder Chairman of the GMR Group, the global infrastructure developer. GM Rao ventured into business starting with a single jute mill in 1978. He entered 28 businesses as a serial entrepreneur and exited most of them with the opportunities thrown up by the opening up of the Indian economy in the early 1990s. Eventually, his single-minded focus on the core infrastructure sector resulted in GMR Group emerging as a well-diversified and professionally managed infrastructure developer with focus on Airports, Energy, Transportation and Urban Infrastructure including SEZs.
 
Rao made the pioneering effort in formulating a Family Constitution and formalized it into a legal document. A set of seven core Values & Beliefs was arrived at, to define the GMR Group’s distinct organization culture. This was further strengthened by a Code of Conduct for all employees, emphasizing on ethical and professional behaviour.
 
Rao set up GMR Varalakshmi Foundation, to cater to social causes. Today, the Foundation is active in 25 locations in India and Nepal. Its 4 areas of activity are education, healthcare, livelihood and community development. He made an endowment of the entire portion of his personal wealth to the GMR Varalakshmi Foundation in March 2011.
 
He was conferred with the honorary Doctor of Laws by York University, Toronto, Canada in 2011, the honorary Doctor of Letters by the Andhra University, India in 2010 and honorary Doctor of Letters by the Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University, Hyderabad, India in 2005. He has served on the Central Board of Directors of Reserve Bank of India (RBI) from 2011 to 2015.

Professor Sougata Ray is a Professor of Strategic Management at the Indian Institute of Management, Calcutta. Professor Ray’s research interests include the influence of policy induced changes in institutional environment on the strategic behaviour of emerging economy firms. Professor Ray received his undergraduate degree in Mechanical Engineering from Bengal Engineering and Science University and his Ph.D from the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad. His research has been published in a variety of journals, books and book chapters. Professor Ray also serves as a consultant to a number of medium-sized companies and business groups on strategic and organisational issues. He has also advised national and state governments on attracting investments, forming industry clusters and improving the competitiveness of local industry.
Thomas Mani

Thomas Mani is part of the third generation family business that is involved in the manufacturing and selling of footwear in India. Thomas is the executive VP- Retail and Outsourcing for the Paragon group of companies. Paragon Footwear is today India’s largest footwear manufacturer with business operations in India, Middle East and Africa. On completing his training for 3 years in the Paragon group, Thomas took up the initiative of starting an outsourcing wing in the organisation to source finished goods of sports shoes that the group was at the time not manufacturing or had no technical expertise in. Today, i.e. within 2 years, this outsourcing vertical accounts for close to 10% of the group’s turnover.

Thomas started a chain of retail stores exclusively for paragon products which are currently in Bangalore, Karnataka and all over Kerala. Thomas is in line to achieve his target of 100 stores within the next 2 years. Apart from heading the two divisions, Thomas is deeply involved with the heads of various departments in Paragon to develop growth strategies and chasing opportunities in the MENA region. Thomas joined the group on completing his B.E and is currently pursuing business studies. Thomas has attended multiple family business conferences at ISB.
