Keynote Speaker

Dr. Viral Acharya, Deputy Governor, Reserve Bank of India, and C. V. Starr Professor of Economics in the Finance department at Stern School of Business, New York University, is the CAF Academic Fellow for 2017.

Dr. Acharya's is an extensively published and active scholar in the areas of financial intermediation and corporate finance. His recent work focuses on the theoretical and empirical analysis of systemic risk of the financial sector, its regulation and its genesis in government-induced distortions. This line of inquiry has led to work that cuts across several research areas such as credit risk and liquidity risk, their interactions and agency-theoretic foundations, and their general equilibrium consequences.

Dr. Acharya has served on the editorial boards of several journals. He has been advisor to several institutions in India and the U.S. including the RBI Academy, NISM, SEBI, ECGI, WFA, CAFRAL, and FINRA. Dr. Acharya is a member of NBER's corporate finance group and CEPR. He has won many awards including the inaugural Banque de France - Toulouse School of Economics Junior prize in Monetary Economics, the FMA, JFE, and WFA best paper awards, and recently, the 2017 Alexandre Lamfalussy Senior Research Fellowship of the Bank for International Settlements (BIS).

Dr. Acharya completed his undergraduate degree in Computer Science and Engineering from Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay in 1995 and Ph.D. in Finance from NYU's Stern School of Business in 2001 where he is currently a chaired professor in the finance department.
