Managing Innovation

Faculty: Prof. Nandini Lahiri, Indian School of Business

Course Overview:
The focus of the course is on the introduction and application of conceptual tools to technology intensive cases. The course adopts the perspective of the general manager who is charged with diagnosing complex situations and resolving them in ways that enhance organizational performance. Readings, primarily from research in strategic management, economics and organizational theory are used in the course. Also case studies that provide an extensive opportunity to integrate and apply analytical tools in a practical, business policy context are examined.

Course Objectives:

  • Get a strategic perspective on the management of innovation
  • Examine the types of technological problems managers choose to solve
  • Develop methods to analyse extent to which managers can capture value from technological innovations
  • Explore ways managers organise knowledge resources to optimise chances of discovering valuable innovations
  • Explore a variety of tools used in practice
