Programme Overview

The purpose of this initiative is to fuel the growth of entrepreneurship via a venture capital training programme. The intense six day programme will develop future venture capitalists who will later shape deals that result in innovative, high growth companies, thus returning high multiples to investors and creating more jobs, opportunities and successful companies.

Participants will learn about how a venture firm operates and all the intricacies of venture capital from sourcing deals to growing the business to managing exits. The course, unlike most others of its genre, will bring to light both the investor’s and the entrepreneur’s point of view when funding a venture, thereby better equipping participants to deal with the person across the investment table. Special attention will be given to venture capital in the current Indian scenario.

The programme will be delivered in a highly interactive and energized environment using a combination of presentations, case studies and discussions with venture capitalists and entrepreneurs. Interactions with industry experts will enable participants to gain real world experience while expanding their personal and business networks.

The programme is brought to you by the Wadhwani Centre for Entrepreneurship Development and the Centre for Executive Education at the ISB, in cooperation with the Wadhwani Foundation and the National Entrepreneurship Network .

        Nuts and bolts such as terminology, term sheets and shareholder agreements


Programme Benefits

Some important aspects that differentiate this programme are listed below. 

    Real world experience through seasoned entrepreneurs and senior venture      capitalists who will be invited to the classroom to share their experience and      expertise.. 

     Case learning methodology will bring challenging real life experiences to the      classroom and put the participants in the habit of making decisions.

    Network that will be developed among the participants themselves and others active      in the venture capital community.

    Depth of learning will be facilitated by this six day course that is longer than most      other venture capital courses.
       
    Partial scholarships will be offered to all participants. The scholarships are made      possible by funding from the Wadhwani Foundation.

Who should attend?


   Professionals who want to make a career shift to venture capital. Candidates must have:
  • At least three years of working experience in a venture capital relevant domain such as information technology, telecom or life sciences. Experience should include close involvement in initiating and building a proposition until market validation. Alternatively, three or more years of experience in finance, particularly in having assessed and executed acquisitions and merger validation. Alternatively, three or more years of experience in finance, opportunities is also acceptable.
     
  • Post graduate degree such as M.S., PhD, MBAs or CA.
                     
    Entrepreneurs currently leading or having recently exited from high-potential,      venture capital backed or backable ventures.

    Associates and Analysts who are current employees of venture or private equity      firms, and who have been with the firm for less than three years. 

    Lawyers and CPAs who are working with or want to expand their clientele to include      venture capital and private equity companies and their portfolio companies. 

    Professionals in commercial banks, insurance companies and other similar
     fund-of-fund organizations, who manage or advise investment into venture capital      and private equity funds  

Knowing that learning also comes from the diverse backgrounds and the knowledge that each participant brings, there will be a selection process to ensure that the class comprises candidates who have both the aspirations and the potential for a successful career inventure capital.


Dates and Venue

Course dates: September 15-20, 2008
Venue: Indian School of Business, Hyderabad
The programme starts at 10:30 am on September 15 and ends at 2:00 pm on Sept 20, 2008.


Fee

Funding from the Wadhwani Foundation allows us to offer partial scholarships to all participants. Regular fee is INR 150,000. Fee after partial scholarship is INR 50,000 per participant which includes tuition, course materials, meals and on campus accommodation in Hyderabad. It does not include travel and other incidental expenses.

The applicant should send payment along with the completed application. Payment should be made in the form of a cheque or draft drawn on the ‘Indian School of Business’ payable at Hyderabad. The cheque or draft should be clearly marked with the name of the applicant.

We will acknowledge the receipt of payment to the address mentioned in the application. If a candidate is not selected to attend the programme, the course fee will be returned to him/her.


Faculty


John Mullins, Ph. D.
John is Associate Professor of Management Practice and Chair of the Entrepreneurship group at the London Business School (LBS).  An award-winning teacher, John brings to his teaching and research 20 years of executive experience in high-growth firms, including two ventures he founded, one of which he took public. John currently serves on the boards of two entrepreneurial companies and has consulted with and done executive education on three continents for a variety of organizations including the African Venture Capital Association. His teaching experience includes courses such as Managing the Growing Business and Financing the Entrepreneurial Business, which he delivers several times annually to both executive and MBA audiences.

John has published three books and more than 30 articles in a variety of outlets, including the Journal of Business Venturing, Journal of Product Innovation Managementand Harvard Business Review. John’s latest book, The New Business Road Test: What Entrepreneurs and Executives Should Do Before Writing a Business Plan, is the definitive work on the assessment and shaping of new venture opportunities.



Antony Ross
Antony has worked for 19 years in the European Venture Capital industry and has experience of investing in many management buyouts and fast growth technology ventures.  He was a director of 3i from 1997 to 2003 and his management roles included leading the company’s Cambridge Office through the growth in hi-tech investment in the late 1990’s, and establishing 3i’s healthcare team in Europe.  

Antony is an LBS graduate and a member of the LBS faculty lecturing on financing entrepreneurial businesses.  He remains an active investor; he is a partner of Bridges Ventures, an innovative investment business targeting developing communities in the UK, and chairs the investment committee of one of the UK’s leading regional technology funds.  He is a non-executive director of three venture capital backed companies and has supported many businesses through both public and private funding rounds.
