FPM: Learning Goals & Assessment Methods
 
Knowledge of Relevant Literature
Familiarity with the literature in the area of specialization, and a comprehensive understanding of the directions and priorities relevant to the area chosen for research.
Assessment:
Assessed by the student’s performance in the comprehensive exam
 
Research Expertise
Ability to independently conduct research publishable in the top tier academic journals.
Assessment:
Assessed by (a) quality of the research paper produced as part of the “research paper requirement’ and (b) successfully defending the dissertation.
 
Teaching Ability
Understanding of the challenges of teaching and managing a classroom, and acquiring the foundation to become an effective teacher.
Assessment:
Assessed by (a) performance of the student in tutorials/problem-solving sessions, as rated by a faculty observer, and optionally, by students, and (b) successfully completing a teaching workshop, pre-approved by the FPM director.
