VAdm Pradeep Chauhan is the Director of the National Maritime Foundation, New Delhi — an appointment he took over on 01 August 2017. The admiral retired in December 2013 after an extremely distinguished four-decade- long service career, wherein he commanded several of the Indian Navy’s frontline surface combatants including the aircraft carrier INS Viraat. He has enjoyed untrammelled success as the Assistant Chief of the Naval Staff for Foreign Cooperation and Intelligence, the Chief of the Staff of the Western Naval Command, and, the Commandant of the new state-of- the-art Indian Naval Academy at Ezhimala, Kerala. Not one to rest on past laurels, he has remained active even after retirement and is a much sought-after leadership mentor and an outstanding orator. Over the past three years he has been repeatedly invited to speak upon an impressive array of subjects to discerning audiences in India and abroad, and has mesmerised them all. He is also a prolific writer on maritime affairs and leadership issues. In the 3½ years since his retirement, he has had over 70 professional articles and papers published in a large variety of Indian and foreign journals and magazines. His latest book, entitled “India’s Maritime Strategy", which has been commissioned by the National Maritime Foundation, New Delhi, is presently in its final stages. Apart from being on the visiting faculty of the higher-command establishments of all three of our defence services, as also tri-Service establishments such as the College of Defence Management, Hyderabad and the National Defence College, New Delhi, he has also been advising the government through the National Security Council Secretariat and the Joint Intelligence Committee. He enjoys international renown as an incisive strategic analyst, and is a respected Adviser and Fellow of several important think-tanks including the Ananta-Aspen Centre, the Forum for Strategic and Security Studies, and the Centre for Advanced Strategic and Security Studies.
