From 1951 -2011, India´s urban population increased from 62.4 million to 377.1 million (source: census of India). This is more than five times the increase in urban population and in fact the majority of the urban population growth happened in the period of 2001-2011, where the urban population increased by 97 million. This is alone more than 30% of the overall urban population increase since 1951. This increase has had a massive influence on the country´s cityscape.
