The ISB experience doesn’t unfold as a neat, linear journey. Instead, it comes in distinct phases, with each term asking something different of you, often before you’ve had the chance to fully process the last.

Looking back, what stands out is not just how much happens in a year, but how differently each phase shapes you. This is how my ISB journey evolved, one term at a time.

The First Shock: Terms 1 and 2

The journey begins at full throttle, with little time to ease in.

Within the first few days, you find yourself navigating subjects like finance, accounting, economics, and statistics, often engaging with them seriously for the first time. For some, it means decoding unfamiliar financial jargon, while for others, it is about revisiting quantitative concepts after years.

The pace is relentless and, at times, overwhelming. Tight academic schedules, continuous evaluations, and the constant need to process large volumes of information quickly become the norm.

These initial terms are not about mastering everything or getting it perfect. They are about adapting to intensity, building stamina, and learning how to keep up without losing momentum.

From Concepts to Practice: Term 3

By the time Term 3 begins, there is a noticeable shift in how learning starts to feel.

Courses such as operations and marketing move beyond definitions and frameworks, pushing you to think about application in real-world contexts. Classroom discussions become more layered, with multiple perspectives shaping how problems are approached and solved.

At the same time, case competitions begin to enter the picture. They start quietly, almost as optional explorations, but very quickly become a significant part of campus life.

August, in particular, brings with it late nights, endless slide decks, team debates, and the first real lessons in working collaboratively under pressure. It is in this phase that learning begins to extend beyond the classroom in a meaningful way.

When Everything Overlaps: Term 4

Term 4 is where the intensity compounds, and everything starts to overlap.

Case competitions are now in full swing, and with them come wins, losses, and eliminations that gradually become part of the routine. At the same time, CV preparation begins in earnest.

September turns into a cycle of drafting and redrafting resumes, seeking multiple rounds of feedback, aligning past experiences with future roles, and continuously refining how you present your story.

All of this unfolds while classes and exams continue in the background, making it a phase defined by constant motion and competing priorities.

The Peak: Placements in Term 5

From October onwards, the focus shifts decisively towards placements.

The placement portal opens, roles go live, and applications begin. October and November pass in what feels like a blur of shortlists, rejections, interview preparation, and strategic decision-making about roles and companies.

Then come Day 1 and Day 2, which define this phase for most students. Day 1.1 is interview day, followed by Day 1.2 when offers are announced. Day 2 follows about a week later, with a similar structure.

The experience varies widely. For some, it may be a single interview in a day, while for others, it can mean eight, ten, or even more interviews, back-to-back across different roles and firms.

The process is intense, unpredictable, and emotionally demanding. For me, this was the most challenging phase of ISB, and it would have been far more difficult without the people around me. My quad, in particular, became a constant source of support through every shortlist, rejection, and long day.

The Pause: SOLSTICE

After the placement rush, SOLSTICE arrives as a much-needed pause.

For two days, the campus transforms into a space of celebration and release. People unwind, reconnect, and finally allow themselves to breathe after months of sustained pressure.

It becomes a shared moment of relief, one that the entire cohort experiences together.

The Closing Stretch: Term 6

Term 6 feels lighter in comparison, but also more fleeting.

While classes continue, the overall energy begins to shift. Conversations move towards travel plans, shared memories, and making the most of the time that remains.

During this phase, my quaddies and I took a six-day trip to Sri Lanka, filled with stunning beaches, long conversations, and moments that will stay with us long after the programme ends.

Before you fully realise it, the term is already drawing to a close, bringing with it a sense of both completion and nostalgia.

What Lies Ahead

As I write this, two Block Weeks and Term 7 still lie ahead.

There is a sense of anticipation around what is yet to come, whether it is new subjects, new interactions, or simply the opportunity to close this journey in a meaningful way.

So far, the ISB experience has been fast-paced, demanding, and deeply rewarding, but never linear. And perhaps that is what makes it truly transformative.

Synopsis:

Avani Yadav traces her ISB PGP journey as a series of intense, evolving phases, from academic overload and case competitions to high-stakes placements and moments of pause. Each term demands something new, shaping how you think, work, and cope under pressure. The experience, she writes, is fast-paced and non-linear, but ultimately transformative in ways that only become clear in hindsight.
