Driven by his desire to contribute to the socio-economic development of his home state, Assam, 33-year-old Surajit Kalita achieved his childhood dream by clearing the state civil services exam on his first attempt in 2018. Having accomplished this milestone and serving as a civil servant for more than 4 years, he now sets his sights on a new goal: a successful transition to the field of management consulting after completing the PGP at ISB.

Posted as Circle Officer and Executive Magistrate under the Revenue and Disaster Management Department of the Government of Assam till April this year, Mr. Kalita has encountered remarkable experiences that shaped his leadership skills. Notably, he led rescue and relief operations during the devastating Assam floods of 2019, demonstrating his ability to align multiple stakeholders and cross-functional teams towards a common objective. His team's dedicated efforts ensured the rescue, relief, and rehabilitation of affected individuals, leaving him with lasting leadership lessons.

Additionally, he efficiently managed the Covid-19 crisis in rural Assam by swiftly establishing quarantine and Covid care centers within his jurisdiction. Despite limited resources, his exceptional people management skills enabled his team to effectively contain infection rates, making their district one of the best-performing in the state.

Reflecting on his motivation to join ISB, he explains, "The opportunity to learn from industry stalwarts, collaborate with peers, and benefit from a world-class faculty at ISB was more than enough motivation for me to invest my time here and enable the personal growth I seek." 

Commenting upon his future goals, he said: “as I seek to make a transition to management consulting, the PGP participation and peer learning at ISB will enable me to pick up refined business problem solving skills and help me apply strategy-driven competencies on challenging problems across industries. A unique and special opportunity to imbibe all the learning and experience from the PGP programme perfectly aligns with my goals and pursuit for growth.”
