Biography

Nirvana Mitra is an Assistant Professor of Economics and Public Policy at the Indian School of Business (ISB). Before joining ISB, he was a Research Director at the Centre for Advanced Financial Research and Learning (CAFRAL), promoted by the Reserve Bank of India, and an Assistant Professor of Economics at Shiv Nadar University, Delhi NCR.

Professor Mitra is a macroeconomist whose research spans international macroeconomics, sovereign debt and defaults, political economy, and consumer finance. His current work focuses on the dynamics of unsecured retail lending in India, exploring the evolving role of credit cards and their fit within the broader landscape of consumer loans in emerging markets. At CAFRAL, he has worked on policy projects related to systemic risk stemming from NBFC lending and the linkages between macroprudential and monetary policies in India.

Professor Mitra holds a Ph.D. in Economics from Stony Brook University, New York, an M.A. in Economics from Jadavpur University, and a B.Sc. in Economics from Ramakrishna Mission Vidyamandira, University of Calcutta.
