Abstract
Family firm (FF) research suggests that generation of family CEOs play a significant role in strategy development and governance. Yet how that impacts FF internationalization remains unclear. Drawing on resource-based view of the firm we examine how extent of internationalization varies across FFs led by founder CEO versus later-generation CEO. We also investigate how the relationship between family CEO generation and FF internationalization is contingent upon two valuable resources: CEO’s international experience and FF’s business-group affiliation. We test our hypotheses using a longitudinal panel dataset of FFs from India. Our findings provide evidence that FFs led by founder CEO exhibit greater internationalization compared to FFs led by later-generation CEO. Our results also demonstrate that the influence of international experience and business-group affiliation on internationalization is shaped by which generation of family CEO is at the helm of the firm.
