Abstract
Entrepreneurs face challenges when they need to acquire resources in their fledgling stage. Acquiring human capital is among the most challenging tasks for entrepreneurs since they compete with employers that can offer more resources and opportunities. In this paper we study the role of job titles. Job titles can offer information about the tasks someone performs in the organization as well as their seniority. We argue that entrepreneurs’ use of inflated job titles represents an opportunity to offer joiners a more flexible wage structure and a more efficient acquisition of human capital. We test our predictions using a lab-in-the-field experiment. We ask a sample of 800 individuals with an entrepreneurial experience in India.
