Research Summary of the Faculty

Professor Bhagwan Chowdhry:

Professor Bhagwan Chowdhry is a Professor of Finance at the Indian School of Business (ISB) and began his academic career at UCLA Anderson in 1988. He has held visiting positions at leading institutions such as the University of Chicago, the University of Illinois at Chicago, the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, and ISB, and is currently a visiting scholar at the Stellar Development Foundation. His research interests include international finance, corporate finance, and strategy, and he has served on the editorial boards of prominent journals such as the Journal of Finance, Review of Financial Studies, American Economic Review, and Journal of Political Economy. He has also conducted executive education programs globally on financial derivatives, corporate risk management, and valuation. In recent years, his work has focused on microfinance, financial technology, and impact investing, reflected in his teaching and supervision of MBA projects in these areas. He is particularly committed to advancing financial inclusion, as demonstrated by his proposed “Financial Access at Birth (FAB)” initiative, which aims to provide every newborn with an initial financial endowment to ensure long-term access to financial services. He is also a frequent contributor to the Huffington Post and the co-founder and executive editor of Finance & Accounting Memos (FAMe), a platform that makes academic research more accessible to a wider audience.

Roles and Responsibilities

You will: 

• Assistance to the faculty – Assisting in their ongoing research work which includes literature review, data collection, database management, and analysis.
  
  1. Data collection – Scraping data from websites or documents and compilation into usable formats for analysis.
  2. Data cleaning – Replicating prior work to document best practices in data cleaning.
  3. Database management – Linking different datasets, ensuring data quality, and processing raw data into processed datasets for modelling and estimation.
  4. Data analysis – Econometric analysis for exploratory data analysis and causal estimation, including visualization and reporting, along with sound knowledge in signal processing/latent models.
  5. Synthesis - Literature search and review, summary, presentation, and analytical writing.
• Time commitment: This role will be for a minimum of two years 

Required Skills and Qualifications

Qualifications:

• Master from DSE or ISI or a reputed institution in India or abroad. B Tech from IIT or B Tech/Master with a high CGPA. MBA from IIM ABCs.

Skills:

• Strong motivation to pursue a career in research in [area] (please explain in your cover letter).
• Experience working with big data systems, concepts, and tools.
• Background in basic econometrics is highly desired.
• Strong coding proficiency in Python, SQL, Stata, R.
• Knowledge of various text mining algorithms and their use cases as well as text pre-processing and normalization techniques.
• Exposure to economic problems and econometric techniques desirable.
• Motivation to learn, with attention to every detail and a strong work ethic.
