About the Event
Professor Sougata Ray, Executive Director, Thomas Schmidheiny Centre for Family Enterprise, Indian School of Business, delivered the keynote address at the conference Reimagining MSMEs: Pathways to Growth and Innovation, held from 16-18 January 2026 at IIM Amritsar.
In his keynote,“Indian SMEs at an Inflection Point: Reigniting Entrepreneurial Passion, Sparking Innovation, and Refocusing Family Capital," Prof. Ray argued that India’s family-owned SMEs represent the country’s Mittelstand—the backbone of its industrial economy and a space where patient capital meets entrepreneurial purpose. He highlighted how this segment brings together tradition and innovation, with enterprises from small towns emerging as global champions.
Emphasising that the inflection point is now, Prof. Ray noted that entrepreneurial passion is ready to be reignited, family capital refocused, and innovation sparked. He concluded by underscoring the need for collective and collaborative multi-stakeholder efforts to unlock the potential of family SMEs as a key driver of India’s global competitiveness in the decades ahead.
