Telecom SIM Subscription Frauds: Global Policy Trends, Risk Assessments, and Recommendations
The report of the research project done by Telangana Cyber Security Bureau (TGCSB) and ISB Institute of Data Science (IIDS) titled, 'Telecom SIM Subscription Frauds: Global Policy Trends, Risk Assessments, and Recommendations' authored by Prof. Manish Gangwar, Dr. Shruti Mantri, Mr. Stephen Raveendra, IPS, Additional Director General of Police, Operations (GreyHounds and Octopus), Telangana and Mr. Kalmeshwar Shingenavar,IPS, Commissioner of Police, Nizamabad District, Telangana was released at an event organised by Telangana Cyber Security Bureau on the 27th of July, 2024.
Mrs. Shikha Goel IPS ADGP CID, ADGP Women Safety Wing, Director, TG Cyber Security Bureau & Director TG FSL, was the Chief Guest. She released the report in the presence of Mrs. Riti Raj, IPS, Joint Director, Anti-Corruption Bureau; Mr. Harshavardhan, IPS, SP Cyber Security Bureau; Mr. Devendra Singh, DP, CSB; Prof. Madhu Viswanathan and Prof. Avik Sarkar, Ph.D.
Synopsis: The joint study in collaboration with Telangana Cyber Security Bureau (TGCSB) exposes the vulnerabilities of OTP-based authentication and identified irregular practices by Point of Sale (POS) agents, such as issuing SIM cards without proper verification or using fake documents. Recommendations based on findings are provided.

The report for the research study titled, ‘The Piracy-Malware Nexus in India – A Perceptions/Experience and Empirical Analysis’ was inaugurated yesterday at the US Consulate, Mumbai, by Shri Brijesh Singh Principal Secretary, Chief Minister Office, Government of Maharashtra, Mr. John Cabeca, US Intellectual Property Counsellor for South Asia and Neil Gane, Head of Regional Operations, Asia-Pacific Region, ACE.
The event was hosted by the ISB Institute of Data Science (IIDS) and ACE in collaboration with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).
Manish Gangwar, Dr. Shruti Mantri, and Paul Watters, PhD, Honorary Professor, Macquarie University and Adjunct Professor, La Trobe University, co-authored the report.
