Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare in India

August 2024

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is significantly reshaping the global landscape, especially in how we approach and manage modern challenges. AI's potential to revolutionize healthcare is substantial, offering improvements in clinical outcomes, enhancing patient experiences, and broadening access to quality care. This report delves into the AI ecosystem within India's healthcare sector, focusing on both its growth and integration. The study employs a dual methodology—combining primary research, where the team engages with twelve major hospitals and AI startups to gauge their level of AI adoption, awareness, and the challenges they encounter, with secondary research that examines the dynamic startup environment in India and the AI-driven healthcare solutions they provide. The findings reveal a significant variation in awareness and perceived risks of AI among respondents. Moreover, the study identifies major obstacles to widespread AI adoption, including the inadequate availability of comprehensive Electronic Health Records (EHRs), substantial infrastructure and development costs, and a shortage of professionals proficient in both healthcare and AI. The study provides directions to practitioners on the leading trends in this topic, academics for further research in this area and policy makers on the way forward for framing regulations and increase adoption.
