About

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a significant public health concern that endangers global health security. India, in particular, bears a substantial burden of drug-resistant pathogens. A primary contributor to the rise and spread of these resistant microorganisms is the widespread misuse and overuse of antimicrobials, both at home and in hospitals.

This research project, “Towards an Antibiotic Roadmap for the Sustainable Entry and Management of Antibiotic X (TANDEM-ABX)” aims to develop a sustainable access-stewardship antibiotic use roadmap in India that ensures appropriate and regulated use and minimizes the chances of development of AMR.

Methodology

Preliminarily, we are examining the pathway of previous antimicrobial that enabled or hindered appropriate usage of the drugs through case studies of Bedaquline and Ceftazidime Avibactam.

Further, we will assess the macro-level health systems factors that affect implementation of AMS in tertiary hospitals.

This desk research would be followed by discussions and roundtable consultations with key local stakeholders to elicit their opinions on the proposed alternative drug introduction pathway.

Intended Outcome

The outcome of this project will be an alternate pathway proposal, which will then lead to a pilot. The pilot will then generate evidence which might have the intended impact of policy change facilitating the sustainable introduction of new last-resort antimicrobial.
