Bharti Institute of Public Policy (BIPP) in collaboration with the Department of School Education, Government of Punjab, organised and conducted a training on ‘Leadership and Motivation’ for directly recruited Headmasters of Government High Schools through the Punjab Public Service Commission (PPSC) of Punjab Education Department.
The workshop is a part of an overarching project ‘Improving Quality of Education in Punjab’, that BIPP is undertaking with the Department of Education, Government of Punjab. The project aims to study policy, institutional and capacity-building reforms required to improve educational outcomes.
It is for the very first time that a training of this kind has been planned and implemented at this scale by Dept of School Education, Govt. of Punjab. A total of 152 Principals, 672 Headmasters, including 317 under Rashtriya Madhymik School Abhiyan (RMSA) have been trained.
The training programme has been designed and coordinated by Dr Aarushi Jain. It was designed with a special focus on critical roles of principals as decision-makers, team leaders and in other functional areas of the management of the school. The goal is to build essential capacities in government schools and to provide the newly recruited principals the required impetus and exposure on management concepts. The idea is to train principals who are at the beginning of their careers. The training will help them guide the growth and evolution of the school and ensure that the deliverables are met. The training was spread over five days with a total duration of 30 hours, wherein duration of each session was two hours. The ISB faculty, experts from the education sector and guest speakers from the Industry were a part of the training.
This is a one of its kind self-paced, asynchronous course specially curated for school leaders keeping in mind the challenges they face in creating and maintaining an enriching and nurturing learning environment.
The training aids in understanding the importance of school leadership reforms to improve school outcomes and overall learning environment. The training modules are designed to promote reflection and dialogue, enable school leaders to self-diagnose and audit the gaps; and set realistic goals and taking action to achieve them. This training will equip school leaders/principals/heads with ability to analyse different practices and develop a common understanding of “where they are”, “where they want to be” and “how to achieve the desired goal”. Most importantly, the school leaders will learn how to involve the students and teachers in the learning and development journey.
The components of this training combines theoretical concepts, experiential learning, knowledge sharing and assessment-based exercises where principals are encouraged to think about the reforms, they will bring in their school.
The course is of 30 hours including almost 12 hours of video content and supplementary readings, quizzes, forums, and other small self-assessments. Each module is broken into several short videos, which are followed by discussion questions, knowledge check quizzes, gamification quizzes and other interactive activities all methodically sequenced to ensure a memorable learning experience. For easy understanding, Punjabi sub-titles have been added in all videos. Participants receive a certificate from Bharti Institute of Public Policy, Indian School of Business on successful completion of the course.
The course is offered on a learner-centric, simple and intuitive Learning Management System (LMS), designed to enable micro learning and higher level of engagement through personalised user profile based learning journey, gamification, social feed, leader board and auto-certification.
The course begins with a broad introduction module which sets the tone and helps in providing an overall synopsis followed by the below mentioned modules.:
