ISB and NBER will hold a series of annual conferences on a broader theme of ‘Economic Policy and the Indian Economy’

The Indian School of Business (ISB) is delighted to announce a partnership with the US-based National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) to hold a series of annual conferences under the broader theme of ‘Economic Policy and the Indian Economy’.

Founded in 1920, NBER is a consortium of US-based academic economists and counts 38 Nobel laureates among its affiliate ranks. It disseminates research findings to academics, public and private-sector decision-makers, and the public by posting more than 1,200 working papers and convening over 120 scholarly conferences, each year.

The ISB-NBER conference series will showcase research on a range of topics that are relevant to India and other nations in South Asia.

The inaugural conference will be held at ISB, Hyderabad campus on December 17-18, 2022, on the theme of ‘Entrepreneurship, Public Policy, and Economic Outcomes’. The conference will spotlight cutting edge work on the Indian economy by some of the world’s brightest economists.

Commenting on the conference, Professor James Poterba, President and CEO, NBER, expressed that there is great excitement around studying the Indian economy because of its remarkable pace of change.

“I am very grateful for ISB's support for this new partnership, which will bring some of North America's leading applied economists to India.  It will enable them to learn about key economic issues and policies and strengthen ties between our academic communities. I expect that a substantial group of NBER researchers will be interested in participating in this initiative,” Professor James said.

Professor Madan Pillutla, Dean, ISB, said that the Indian academic community in general and ISB, in particular, is honoured to host the first annual ISB-NBER conference.  “Thought leaders and experts will converge at this prestigious conference and bring to the fore some of the finest perspectives which in turn will pave the way for designing new and innovative strategies for the economic development of the country,” the Dean said.

The meeting will be co-organised by Professor Shilpa Aggarwal (ISB) and Professor Amit Seru (Stanford University and NBER). In addition to bringing together diverse economists working on the most pressing issues of job creation and entrepreneurship in India, the conference also promises to be a platform for economists working in India to showcase their work to a global audience.

Professor Aggarwal said, “We are very excited about the upcoming ISB-NBER conference. The conference represents a unique opportunity for the many bright researchers working in India to showcase their work to a global audience.”
