EY works with higher education organisations to promote academic studies about emerging market challenges, drive entrepreneurship and cultivate the next generation of leaders in emerging markets through the Institute for Emerging Market Studies (IEMS). The universities that are part of the IEMS network are: Indian School of Business (ISB); HKUST Institute for Emerging Market Studies; SKOLKOVO Institute for Emerging Market Studies; China Europe International Business School (CEIBS).
IEMS is a global network of academic institutions, supported by EY, that are based in emerging markets, dedicated to the study of the impact of macroeconomics in their respective markets and the global marketplace. Its purpose is to create insightful, connected and responsive thought leadership. IEMS also aims to participate in, and lead the discussion on, various policy-making forums related to emerging markets, and inform decision-makers with insightful perspectives on issues that matter to the global economy.
ISB joined the IEMS network in 2014. At ISB, IEMS is “Initiative for Emerging Market Studies”. Within this scope defined by IEMS, ISB-IEMS seeks to fund research to increase the impact of ISB faculty on emerging markets topics.
EY in association with the ISB requests for research proposals from the faculty members at the Indian School of Business. After reviewing the proposals, EY awards research grants to the faculty to facilitate research that would help the practitioners succeed in the emerging markets. The selected proposals are aligned with the key focus areas of EY and the mission of IEMS.
In the area of entrepreneurship and financial inclusion, the ISB faculty mainly deal with issues of financial intermediation, exploring factors driving entrepreneurship, and the role of ICT (Information and Communications Technology) on the distribution of the labour market and economic outcomes. In an Indian context, this leads to an additional focus on rural areas, where majority of the population reside.
At ISB, the faculty take a look at challenges faced by emerging economy multinationals (EMNCs), their market strategies related to the entry in other advanced and emerging markets as well as innovation networks. Their current projects explore innovation strategies of emerging economy multinationals (EMNCs) in newly emerging industries of wind and solar power.
Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) is one of the critical areas in emerging markets. Though global, laws related to IP (Intellectual Property) need to be implemented at a local level and this provides an interesting situation because of the pre-existing law structure and market structures in developing countries. The ISB Faculty examine effects of IPR on different aspects of innovation and the influence of stronger patents on the functioning of Markets for Technology (MFT).
Understanding consumer behaviour in emerging markets is a key to unlock the potential markets. At ISB, the faculty engage in research focusing on understanding consumer propensity for sensory consumption, and its impact on consumer decision making.
The research conducted at ISB-IEMS primarily focuses on:
Our research centre conducts field-based research on issues related to the management and use of information technology (IT) in complex organisations.
Our goal is to create a learning community by working together with researchers, governments and corporate partners and expand reach of the research we conduct. Further, translation of the research is achieved by data-driven models that help in identifying actionable insights that support dissemination of information through various forms of publication.
